What is Functional Nutrition and how can it help me?
Functional Nutrition comes from Functional Medicine, also known as “root cause” medicine. Functional medicine nutrition starts first with looking at whether the foundations of health are in place and first addressing the foundations: eating a nutrient-dense, whole food diet, proper north to south digestion, eating balanced macronutrients (protein, fats and carbohydrates), stabilizing blood sugar levels, hydration, mineral balance and stress and nervous system support.
Functional nutrition is unique in the nutrition space in that it:
Views the body and systems of the body as INTERCONNECTED rather than operating and functioning separately. Dysfunction in one system, organ or body part leads to dysfunction in other parts.
Deals with the ROOT CAUSE of health problems and not just managing symptoms - it looks at what is upstream that manifests as symptoms downstream
Uses FUNCTIONAL LABS when needed to treat based on data, rather than relying only on symptoms
Helps PREVENT disease rather than waiting for it to turn up. It looks at a far wider range of lab markers than conventional medicine tests and assesses based on healthy, optimal ranges rather than just non-diseased ranges
Views health as OPTIMAL WELLNESS rather than the absence of sickness and disease
As a Functional Nutritionist and Holistic Health Coach who trained under the Funk’tional Nutritionist Erin Holt, I work with the whole person - their physical, mental and emotional experiences within those bodies. I will look for imbalances and help you to support your whole body to help correct them. This includes your diet, lifestyle and environment. I run and interpret Functional Labs for my nutrition clients including GI MAP for gut and immune health and DUTCH hormone testing for sex and stress hormones and their metabolites.
